This word 'Spirit' is 'ruwach' in Hebrew, and it means 'wind, by resemblance breath' (Strong's no. 7307). This is when God's Spirit 'spoke', starting the cleansing of that state of 'ruin' and began this earth age (Flesh Age) we are now in. This act is also referred to in John 3:3-8, Romans 8. You'll also see this 'ruwach' translated as the 'four winds' in several places in the King James +Version.
Isaiah 45:18: For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the Lord: and there is none else.
