We now continue with the 18th verse of Genesis 4, and we are going to discover Cain's offspring, which you'll notice later with Gen.5, is separate from 'the Adam'. We ask a word of Wisdom from our Father in Jesus' Name, Amen.
Gen 4:18 And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech.
This word Enoch is 'Chanowk' in the Hebrew meaning 'initiated' (Strong's no. 2585). We left off at the last Letter with Gen.4:17 and Cain being cast out of the presence of God, going to the 'land of Nod', finding a wife there, and they begat Enoch, and built the first city, naming it Enoch also. This 'Enoch' here from Cain is not the same Enoch of Adam, given in Gen.5. This is important for us take note, because God is checking us out to see if we're paying attention. When I was young, I used to skip these names, mainly because I had no reference to translate their meanings, and no teacher offered to enlighten me to their importance. A Strong's Concordance and a Brown-Driver-Briggs Hebrew Lexicon is very useful here.
'Irad' is 'lyrad' in the Hebrew, and it means 'fugitive' or 'fleet' (Strong's no. 5897). 'Mehujael' means smitten of God (Strong's no. 4232). 'Methusael' means 'man who is of God' (Strong's no. 4967). Notice it didn't say which 'God'. It is important to remember that in the Hebrew Old Testament, our Father's Names are always given in reference to Him, not just 'God'. In Genesis, His Name in the Hebrew usually is 'Elohiym', 'El', etc. The King James translators put the English word 'God' in all those places; they even added 'God' in Gen.49:24 with 'the mighty 'God'. 'Mighty' is in the Hebrew manuscripts and that's all, so the King James translators added the word 'God' in order to make the English carry better. These are all good reasons for each student using a Strong's Concordance. Notice this 'Methusael' sounds a lot like the 'Methuselah' who is from Adam's lineage in Gen.5? Kind of tricky isn't it? When our Father does something like this in His Word, it means He is trying to bring your attention to something deeper. Imagine, if your language of birth was Hebrew, the meanings of these names would jump out at you. 'Lamech' is 'Lemek' from the Hebrew and means 'powerful' (Strong's no. 3929). There's also a Lamech in Adam's lineage, who was Noah's father, but he's not the same one given here.
Again, these children from Cain are from his wife he took in the 'land of Nod, on the east of Eden'. His wife was already there in 'Nod', being part of the 'sixth day' creation of the races given in
Gen.1:26. And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth over the earth.
Gen 1: 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
God created man Adam on the sixth (vau) day in Gen 1:27, these were man in general. God created male and female, and gave them dominion over the earth.
Then in Gen 2:7; God created another Adam (eth Ha Adham) from the dust, and another female called Eve. The main purpose for this man in 2:7 was to establish a bloodline from which our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ would be born in the flesh from. From Seth; all the way down to Jesse/Mary. With many attacks on God’s plan by Satan starting from Cain down to King Herod, and still continuing even today.
Gen 4:19 And Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
