When Satan is bound for 1000 years

Wyatt Ciesielka & Edited by John Bradburn

Faithful Christians annually observe the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) as a recurring reminder that Satan the Devil will soon be bound and imprisoned in the abyss for 1000 years.  However, the Day of Atonement represents much more than that.

Although most people do not realise it, Satan is the current "god of this age" and he "deceives the whole world".

2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

The Light of the Gospel

Such is the ministry of the New Covenant. It is only of God’s mercy we are called to this privilege, and we owe it to Him not to tire in His service.

2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.

1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

If any find our Gospel dark, it is because Satan has blinded their minds to prevent the illumination of the Gospel of Christ’s glory from shining upon them. Self-commendation is thus no part of our message. 2 Corinthians 4:5 For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Satan is a rebel, a liar and a murderer. Nevertheless, God will not permit him to rule forever. Their claim of God as Father Jesus challenges without qualification, and He boldly charges them with descent from the devil, which as murderer, and liar they imitate. (The last clause of verse 44 may also be rendered, “For a liar is also his father,” which is a reference to the devil’s father. By substituting Cain for devil in the first clause –1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous—the difficulty of assigning a father to the devil is evaded, and the devil is represented as Cain’s father.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

For thousands of years, the Day of Atonement has foreshadowed Satan being bound. For thousands of years, the Day of Atonement is an annual reminder that Christ's sacrifice and His blood "atones" for our sins and "covers" (kapar) them. For thousands of years, the Day of Atonement is an annual reminder of one of the major steps required in God's plan of Salvation for mankind.

The Day of Atonement is one of God's annual Holy Days. On this day, Christians (Not only Jews) remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, whose blood atones for our sins, and Christians humble themselves through extra prayer and fasting as instructed in Scripture.

Leviticus 23:27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

Psalm 35:13 But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

Matthew 6:16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

Acts 27:9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

Because of the meaning behind the Day of Atonement, God's saints also eagerly look forward to one day "shining like the brightness of the firmament" in incredible power and righteousness.

Daniel 12:1-3

1 And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

2 And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

3 And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

At the end of the age, which, is the time of the downfall of the evil king, Michael, the angel who defends the holy people, will be needed, for a period of bitter trouble will come http://godsplan.org.uk/greattribulation2.htm . But the faithful, whose names are written in the book, shall be delivered. There shall be a resurrection of many to an enduring experience of either joy or sorrow. The Martyrs who had given their lives for the faith—these are to be rewarded in the afterlife; and the apostates who betrayed the faith—these will receive the punishment they deserve. In that time the wise and the righteous shall shine like stars. God's saints will then replace Satan as righteous rulers over this world, under Christ as King of kings.

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Revelation 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

Many years ago, ancient Israel annually foreshadowed Satan's banishment by observing the Day of Atonement. Leviticus chapter 16 describes the observance and reveals two goats. Notice that Leviticus 16:8, 10 reference the azazel (scapegoat).

Preparations.

On the goats, lots are to be cast, one for Jehovah, and one for Azazel. What the word meant is unknown, but it should be retained as the proper name of a wilderness demon. There is no doubt, whatsoever, that the earliest imagination pictured Azazel as real.

Leviticus 17:7 And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.

In the Book of Enoch (Second century B.C.) imagination runs riot about him, and he is said to have been the leader of the fallen angels who contracted unions with the daughters of men. (Genesis 6:1—4), and to him all sin is ascribed.

Enoch 64:9 Afterwards my great-grandfather Enoch seized me with his hand, raising me up, and saying to me, Go, for I have asked the Lord of spirits respecting this perturbation of the earth; who replied, On account of their impiety have their innumerable judgments been consummated before me. Respecting the moons have they inquired, and they have known that the earth will perish with those who dwell upon it,

(59) and that to these there will be no place of refuge for ever.

(59) = Respecting the moons ... dwell upon it. = "Because of the sorceries which they have searched out and learned, the earth and those who dwell upon it will be destroyed" (Knibb, p. 155).

Enoch 65:2 That they may be for judgment, and for the destruction of all those who remain and dwell upon the earth.

This verse refers to the chaos and destruction caused by the Nephilim. http://www.godsplan.org.uk/thenephilim.htm.  Only Noah and his family, and the animals of the earth were saved from the oncoming deluge.

Leviticus 16:8, 10

08 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

10. But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

As Jewish traditions correctly teach, this goat represents the super archangel known as Satan, the Adversary, and the father of lies. The Israelites sins were placed on the Azazel goat (scapegoat) and it was led into the wilderness by a "strong" man.

Leviticus 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: scapegoat

This ancient process foreshadows Satan's coming banishment and removal in the near future.

Revelation 20:1-3

1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

However, there was another goat – a slain goat – and these two goats could not represent beings that are more different. The Azazel goat was banished into the wilderness. The slain goat provided for atonement to God.

The slain goat foreshadowed Christ the Son of God, our compassionate High Priest and our coming Messiah, and pictured His righteous sacrifice that atoned for our sins.

Leviticus 16: 8, 15

8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

15 Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:

Hebrews reveals how Christ's perfect sacrifice replaced the requirement of animal sacrifices for sin. Hebrews then describe how the law is written into the hearts of faithful Christians today, and will be written in the hearts of the entire world during Christ's millennial rule, in the Kingdom of God.

Hebrews 10:1-10

01 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

02 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

03 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

04 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

05 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

06 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

07 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

08 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

09 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 10:11-18

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

The failure of the Jewish Sacrifices, and the Finality of the Sacrifice of Christ.

In this paragraph, the writer emphasises again the futility of the sacrifices of the Levitical order and shows how they have been superseded by the perfect sacrifice of Christ (The Lamb). He uses five arguments:

1.                The Law is only the shadow and not the reality of the revelation, which was to come in Jesus Christ. The O.T. was the shadow cast by the Christian faith before its advent. In Christianity the heavenly reality—the very TRUTH of God—broke into human history. (Heb verse 1)

2.                The facts themselves determine the inefficiency of the Jewish sacrifices. (vv1—2).  There was no finality about them; they had to be constantly repeated. They never took away the sense of sin from the worshipers. If they had been effectual, there would have been no need for constant repetition.

3.                The sacrifices could only produce an annual rememberance of sins. (v 3). Instead of removing sin, the Law intensified the sense of the sin. This is exactly the position taken by Paul. “Through the Law cometh knowledge of sin.” (Rom 3:20). “The Law came in beside, that the trespass might abound.” (Rom 5:20; cf Rom 4:15; 7:8. Gal 3:19).

4.                The very nature of the sacrifices proves that they are invalid (v 4). It is impossible that the blood of animal victims should be able to cleanse a guilty conscience. The sacrifices are external, moreover, there is no bond of communion between the officer and the sacrifice, and consequently there is no moral element in it.

5.                The new and most powerful argument in the passage is based upon the quotation from Psalm 40:6—8. The writer follows the LXX (70) Septuagint version as usual, and it is the translation in this version which really gives him his argument. The first two lines in the original Hebrew differ substantially from the rendering in the Greek version.

Psalm 40:6—8 (KJV)

6 Sacrifice and offering Thou didst not desire; Mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast Thou not required.

7 Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,

8 I delight to do Thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

For the latter phrase the LXX reads;

Psalm 40:6—8

6 Sacrifice and offering Thou wouldst not; but a body Thou hast prepared me: whole-burnt-offering and sacrifice for sin Thou didst not require.

Obedience is the great TRUTH here conveyed; and, on the same grounds as in 1 Sam15:22. Jer 722—23. Heb 10:5 is not a quotation of this verse: it is what Messiah “said” when He came into the world to perform what Psalm 40:6 prophesied, when He had become incarnate, (to give bodily form and substance to) and could say, “I am come”. He must change the word “ears” for the “body”, in which that obedience was to be accomplished, and He had a right to change the words, and thus adapt them. Jehovah sent Christ to remove the yolk from off the necks of His children, therefore making it easier to eliminate sin by believing in Christ the Messiah once for all; and to turn from disobedience to obedience. It is not a question of quotation, or of the Septuagint versus the Hebrew text. Note the heaping up of these expressions to emphasise the obedience, and observe the alternation of positive and negative in verse 9—10.

Sacrifice and offering. Not desired.

Mine ears hast Thou digged. (Pos)

Burnt-offering and sin-offering. Not required.

Lo, I come to do. (Pos).

Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

Satan is not currently bound or removed from ruling this world! Today, violence, hunger, religious confusion and grief plague the earth. However, as Satan well knows, his "time is short". At Christ's coming, Satan will be led away to where he cannot harm the world any longer. Just as the Azazel goat was bound "by a strong man" and "banished" into the wilderness, so will a mighty angel bind and banish Satan into the "bottomless pit" or "the abyss" (abyssos) for 1,000 years.

Then, righteousness, peace and goodness will prevail throughout the earth.

Psalm 67:4 O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.

Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Revelation 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

Amen
